Under the KOSGEB R&D, Product Development and Innovation Support Program, the goal is to move natural blue (phycocyanin) and red (phycoerythrin) pigments derived from microalgae from laboratory results into production. The aim is to establish a local, reliable supply for inputs that have so far been met through imports, and to deliver market-ready products suitable for food and cosmetics applications.
With program support, the production infrastructure has been built and commissioned: pilot production lines and process equipment are in place, and a traceability system is operational. For laboratory-validated components, extraction and purification steps have been streamlined; durability testing (light/thermal/pH) and safety evaluations have been expanded; shelf-life and formulation compatibility studies are ongoing.
The system operates with a circular, low-waste approach: by-product valorization, closed-loop water use, and energy efficiency are prioritized. As a result, both the carbon footprint and waste generation decrease, while cost and lead-time predictability improve. In 2025, the plan is to move to pilot batches and field trials, followed by the market launch of safe, compliant products that meet regulatory requirements.
